Muloorina Station & Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre North, SA

Muloorina Station

From where we were staying in Marree, Muloorina Station is 57km to the north on a very good dirt road off the Oodnadatta Track. It is a working cattle station but offers camping beside the water hole. There are picnic tables, flushing toilets, a bird hide and an honesty box for the $10 per night camp fee.

Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre North

A further 51km on from Muloorina Water hole is Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre North, which we recently flew over. We traveled along the eastern side of the southern lake on a very corrugated dirt road, before coming to Level Post Bay on the northern lake. Level Post Bay is the deepest part of the lake when it is filled to capacity and its bottom is the “lowest natural point in Australia, at approximately 15 m (49 ft) below sea level“.

There is a plaque commemorating Donald Campbell who set the land speed record of 403.10 mph (648.73 km/h) for a four-wheeled vehicle (Class A) On 17 July 1964 in the CN7 on the Lake Eyre salt flats at this site.

Such an amazing part of Australia.

Cheers til next time, Helen & Tim
