One Tree Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef. With over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2,300 Kilometres, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system. One Tree Island is one of only two ‘no-entry scientific zones’ on the Great Barrier Reef. Unauthorised boats entering this area receive heavy penalties.
Heading south from Mission Beach we went in search of platypus in Broken River.
With the polar blast hitting us on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, and temperatures plummeting to under 20oC we packed our van and headed north for some warmer, dryer weather. Ironically, the day we left home there were blue skies and sunshine.
Lizard Island is a granite island about 10 square kilometres in size, with three smaller islands nearby (Palfrey, South and Bird). Together these islands form the Lizard Island Group and their well-developed fringing reef encircles the 10-metre (33 ft) deep Blue Lagoon. Wikipedia
For at least 5,500 years the Butchulla people have called their island home K’gari, meaning Paradise. 185 years ago it was named Fraser Island by Europeans when shipwreck survivors from the ‘Stirling Castle’ came ashore. In late 2021 the island was renamed K’gari.
