Busselton WA (part 2) Snorkelling

Busselton Jetty

We loved snorkelling around this jetty. Sometimes we left from the shore, other times we walked out a distance and left from one of the platforms placed along the jetty for swimmers and snorkelers.

The Jetty’s submerged timber and steel piles form Australia’s longest artificial reef, creating a vibrant and diverse habitat for over 300 marine species!  Busselton Jetty’s environment team are responsible for sustainably managing the reef through marine monitoring programs, advice for responsible diving and snorkelling, and pile rehabilitation following essential maintenance works.

Yallingup Aquarium

The Aquarium at Yallingup is a natural rock pool surrounded by granite bolders with clear calm water. A great place for families. From the little dirt car park its a 600 metre walk, or from the larger sealed car park at the Canal Rocks boat ramp, it’s about a 1.3km walk. The Canal Rocks boardwalk leaves from the boat ramp car park and is well worth a visit.

The 1.3km path from the Canal Rocks car park to the Aquarium follows the Cape to Cape hiking trail. A 123km walk along the spectacular coastline from the light house at Cape Naturalist’s to the lighthouse at Cape Leeuwin.

Canal Rocks

Half a kilometre further along the road from the Aquarium car park is Canal Rocks Boardwalk and Boat Ramp. This area is part of the Ngari Capes Marine Park.

Ngari Capes Marine Park is approximately 124,000 hectares (or about 1,238 square kilometres) and stretches from Geographe Bay near Busselton south to Flinders Bay near Augusta, extending about three nautical miles offshore.

Below these waters is one of the most diverse temperate marine environments in Australia. Here warm, tropical waters from the Leeuwin Current mingle with the cool Capes Current resulting in a great diversity of marine life, including many species unique to this area.
