On our way from Port Douglas to Townsville we stopped at Cardwell for one of their famous Crab Sandwiches and were not disappointed. It’s a lovely spot, though the beach is a ‘no go’ zone because of the resident crocodiles.

Tully Sugar Mill, Qld
It’s sugarcane harvest season in Far North Queensland. The Tully Sugar Mill is the only mill still conducting tours.
Port Douglas, Qld
It’s wonderful to be surrounded by lush green rainforest, white sand, aqua blue water and the Great Barrier Reef. Loving Port Douglas.

Pinnarendi Station Stay and Cafe is a gem hidden in outback Queensland.
Homeward Bound – Brisbane to Melbourne
Having said our sad farewells to family and friends in Brisbane we headed south. (Friends now also include the lovely Dr Lawrence Lee and all his wonderful staff who we got to know very well over the 5 months. If you have a detached retina go see him, he is fantastic.)
The first night we stopped at a free camp, ‘Beardy Creek Rest Area’ near Yarrowford, NSW. Wind so strong the trees were horizontal, thunder so loud it shook the van, lightning like the midday sun, and hail like snow.

After leaving Longreach we travelled east along the ‘Capricorn Way’ stopping at the very small town of Jericho for lunch. Cattle along the highway were a constant worry.
Winton and Longreach, Qld
From Cloncurry we continued travelling south through inland Queensland to Winton where the famous ‘Waltzing Matilda Centre’ burnt down earlier this year so unfortunately we were unable to visit. Being famous for dinosaur digs, all along the main street the rubbish bins are dinosaur feet.

Leaving Karumba we headed south to Cloncurry. We saw many roadtrains three trailers long, infact they are very common out here.

Travelling west from Undara Lava Tubes we stopped overnight at Croydon. The road into Croydon is interesting as there are a number of sections of new two lane road alternating with sections of single lane road. The single lane sections mean getting off the road when ever a car or road train came from the other direction, not pleasant with a caravan. Apparently the council do a section each time some funding comes through, quite practical not to start at one end and work to the other as it keeps drivers alert on an otherwise monotonous straight flat road and provides passing opportunities.

From Chillagoe we travelled to Undara Lava Tubes, first travelling south east toward the coast, then south west in a V shape (There is a more direct route not suitable for caravans). Thus the countryside varied dramatically through out the day. We drove through a mountain range, rainforest, tablelands and past wind farms. Cattle were always a hazard, even in the towns.
